About me

I have over ten years experience as an Chinese-English translator. I am adept at Chinese-English translation in these areas-- art, culture, news, history, politics, business, public relations, travel, management, law, defense, industry, economics, finance, natural environment and literature (modern). I am also able to do semi-technical translations to a high standard.

Qualifications BA (Hons) Politics and East Asian Studies, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, (1990) (2:1 degree) Member, Chartered Institute of Linguists, UK (I am a full, professional grade member of this widely-respected professional translators and interpreters organization)  Membership number: 022420 (see my details on their website www.iol.org.uk, Find-a –Linguist, translator, Chinese>English) Diploma in Translation (Chinese>English) Chartered Institute of Linguists Educational Trust, 2006 (two “Merits” from three papers)

Education    BA (Hons) Politics and East Asian Studies, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 1985~1990         Chinese language study    Taiyuan Teachers’ College 1987-1988—Chinese language courses (the third year of my university course was spent in China)     Taiyuan, Shanxi, PRC, 1988~89—Chinese self-study (I took a year out from my university course to study Chinese )      University of Newcastle upon Type, UK, 1989-1990—Chinese language course (Chinese was one of the courses in my final year at university)         Mandarin Training Center, Taipei 1990~1992- Chinese language courses  (first year under 1-year ROC Ministry of Education scholarship, one of only two awarded each year to UK students, second year as a self-financed student)

 

Experience

Freelance Chinese-English translation and English writing work:     "Taiwan Headlines" website translator (2001) Over 30 original English articles on Taipei’s history, society and culture(around 2000 words) published in Taipei City Government’s bi-monthly magazine "Discover Taipei", 2000-2003    Translator for Straits Exchange Foundation's "Exchange" English magazine. Over 250 articles (1500 to 2500 characters on average) on cross-strait affairs and Taiwan’s society and culture translated from 1997 to present.    Occasional translator for the director of the ROC Council of Labor Affairs (1992-present) Translator for Everest Textile Co's monthly bulletin (1999-present)     Occasional translator for Taipei mayor's press conferences (SARS etc) (through Dept. of Information, Taipei City Government) (2000-)    Occasional editor/translator for Dept. of Information, Taipei City Government (2000-)    Translation/English writing for Taiwanfun magazine (2002-)    Occasional translator for “Travel In Taiwan” magazine (Bureau of Tourism) (2002-) 

I also translated speeches for the ROC Minister of Transport and Communications for the annual ROC-US ministerial transport meeting, 2001 and 2002.

     I have also done translations (in Taiwan) for:        Sinorama, Institute for Information Industry, the Mainland Affairs Council, the Council for Labor Affairs, Council for Cultural Affairs, Taipei Hakka Cultural Hall, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Transport and Communications, Contemporary Design magazine, Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei Museum of Fine Art, National Foundation for Culture and Art, Shi-san Hang Museum of Archeology, Yingge Ceramics Museum, National Museum of History, Taiwan Semi-conductor Manufacturing Corp., National Cultural Property Office, Xueba National Park, CPS Law Firm, The Earth magazine. In the past I have also done work for several leading Taiwan translation companies.
